Director’s Blog – March 2024 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/blogs/post/directors-blog-march-2024/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 18:41:40 +0000 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/?p=9538720 Women’s History Month is observed each year in March.  Just like the Academy Awards, each of us can highlight the achievements of women throughout the ages.  Women have made all sorts of strides, inventions and are leaders in so many fields.  The choices are endless as to the direction a woman may choose to take.  She may decide on multiple options because the decision is hers.

You are encouraged to use the library to discover the roles many women play in society, from traditional to non-traditional; the sky is the limit.  And, if the sky is not a goal, a quiet existence works just fine, in the search for that all important niche.  Visit your local library and see the tributes to women.

March is also National Nutrition Month; Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month; and Epilepsy Awareness Month.  Materials on those subjects can most certainly be found at the library.  Let it be your resource.

Additionally, the online resources for research, leisure reading, movies and music, are still available to you.  Just log on in your spare time, 24/7 and be amazed at what you will find.  Your library card offers you those opportunities.  You are wise to take advantage of them.  Share with others the knowledge you gain so they, too, can be amazed.  It should not be a well-kept secret.

Finally, don’t forget to start reading the 2024 One Book, One Read selection, The Measure by Nikki Erlick.  The date for her to be with us is set for August 10th.   Stay tuned for updates.

Director’s Blog – February 2024 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/blogs/post/directors-blog-february-2024/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 18:20:41 +0000 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/?p=9538716 February brings with it the promise of spring in its wake, and the engaging pursuit of love and happiness. With Valentine’s Day, a lot of people are in the mood to make feelings known and to look toward the future with wonder.  Here’s hoping everyone shares love; and finds new or rekindled love, if desired.

Other notable observances during February are Black History Month; American Heart Month; National Pizza Day; and Presidents’ Day.   Also, a trip to the library may provide the history of those events and why they have risen to prominence.

Those shared observances allow for traditions, old and new to be explored.  One new tradition of the Fulton County Library System is the One Book, One Read Event.  The year 2024 will be the third County-wide book read.  The selected title is The Measure, by bestselling author, Nikki Erlick.  The signature program will be held on August 10th.   Stay tuned, as the details unfold.  The program is generously funded by the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation.

Additionally, you are invited to go to the website www.fulcolibrary.org and look for information on ASL Defined, to begin learning American Sign Language.  Soon, the website will have detailed info on how you can pursue higher education through the Library’s offering of Career Online High School.  Both initiatives are sponsored by the Library Foundation.

Rounding out the services and events this month are storytime and arts and crafts programs; concerts and visiting writers.  Stop by your local library and see what is happening.

We continue to look forward, learning from the past, savoring the moment, and looking toward the future.  Join us.

Director’s Blog – January 2024 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/blogs/post/directors-blog-january-2024/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 16:38:11 +0000 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/?p=9537542 One thing, now obvious to me, is that the only thing that is constant is change.

That statement is evident as time changes; and circumstances, plans, and many other things take on different aspects.  Although not always easy, we can control much of what change brings.

A new year brings with it changes, new things, old things, and perhaps ideas on adapting to them in varying ways.  This is the year that I plan to read different genres of books. A few years ago, I discovered a fondness for reading biographies and autobiographies.  This year I will read more of them.

Also, I am seeking to build an appreciation for writers unfamiliar to me.  I recently discovered the work of Boo Walker.  Yes, “Boo.”  I have yet to discover if his name is tied to his writing in any special way.  He is the author of The Stars Don’t Lie; The Singing Trees; and A Spanish Sunrise.   Boo also writes thrillers under the pen name, Benjamin Blackmore.  Since he lives in Maine, among lighthouses, which I love, it seems I should check out his books.  You may be well ahead of me and already know many books by Boo.  But I intend to join you as soon as I can find the time.

Last, but not least, one of the most exciting things this year will be the announcement of the 2024 One Book, One Read selection.  Hopefully, it will be a book you will find very interesting.  The plan is to let that secret out very soon, so everyone will have time to read and talk about it.  It promises to be a discussion starter.

Come inside a Fulton County Library and begin your touchpoint journey.  Watch out, because doing so may lead to change.

Director’s Blog – December 2023 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/blogs/post/directors-blog-december-2023/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 16:37:26 +0000 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/?p=9536702 Happy holidays; and the best of the new year to you, your family, and friends!

There are numerous libraries throughout the nation and the world.  People continue to attest to their usefulness.   We who work in libraries are grateful to you for your continued support.

A few days ago, a grandmother, who is also a patron, wrote to say how much her granddaughter loves the library, especially the space.  It is so gratifying to know that the floors and walls housing so many books and materials are appreciated, even by a small child.  Her experiences within those spaces may not be the same for everyone else and may just be uniquely hers to remember and share as she grows up.

As time passes, Library employees get to see various generations of patrons. Often, it’s the grandparents who introduce children to the libraries, thus increasing their bond.  Parents and other caregivers frequent the facilities and join the kids in a love of learning, reading, and exploring what the shelves offer.

As the year comes to an end, it is hoped that the Library has been an integral part of your 2023 journey.   You are always invited to stop by one of the 34 libraries and be a part of the action.  Allow us to assist you with your learning, literacy, leisure reading, and digital needs.

Exciting things are around the corner when 2024 arrives.  Stay tuned to see what you just may find out you’ve been missing.   Hurry to the library.  Sit down for a while and turn the pages of a book.  Get excited to read the words of others; view pictures of things you may not have seen before; start learning a new language; sign up for a class; stay for a program.  Afterwards, tell someone about it.   You may make a difference in their journey.
