In the News: McHugh, Maksoud, Vollmer, and Ward Featured in International Bridge Conference Magazine
The Spring 2024 issue of Pittsburgh ENGINEER magazine, dedicated to the 41st annual International Bridge Conference (IBC), highlights four Gannett Fleming bridge leaders. This edition showcases innovative Southwest bridge projects and engineering advancements.
In the article “TxDOT Noncontact Splices in Non-Circular Columns,” Senior Director of Texas Operations Michel Maksoud, PhD, PE, and Bridge Manager Christopher Vollmer, PE, PMP, discuss implementing noncontact lap splices in non-circular columns for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). This innovative approach addresses the challenge of connecting dissimilar column shapes, enhancing structural integrity, and cost efficiency. The parameters for transverse reinforcement required in non-circular bridge columns are incorporated into the TxDOT Bridge Design Manual, setting new standards for structural connections.
Senior Bridge Engineer Andrew Ward, PEng, describes the Taxiway U at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport bridge design in his article. This project aims to improve aircraft maneuverability and reduce queue times by providing a new cross-field taxiway that passes over main access roads and the Sky Train Automated People Mover. The design accounts for the heaviest aircraft, such as the Airbus A380, ensuring the taxiway can handle significant loads and maintain operational efficiency.
Senior Structural Engineer Jonathan McHugh, PE, CBSI, NCTI, FSEI, serves on the IBC Executive Committee and as the magazine issue editor. Published by the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania, the magazine provides insight into state-of-the-art transportation techniques, celebrates notable achievements in bridge engineering, and fosters an exchange of ideas among professionals in the field.
