Golden Glades Multimodal Transportation Facility

Our Client’s Challenge

The Golden Glades area of northern Miami-Dade County, Florida, sits at a critical interchange of highways connecting the Florida Turnpike, Interstate 95, US 441, State Road 9, and the Palmetto Expressway.

Previous public transportation opportunities included a commuter train platform and park-and-ride lot, but equitable mobility options were limited. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 6 and Miami-Dade County envisioned a centralized gateway to seamlessly connect vehicles, bus service, and Tri-Rail, the commuter rail linking Miami International Airport, Downtown Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach County.

Our Solution

Gannett Fleming collaborated with FDOT District 6 under a general engineering consultant contract to transform the existing park-and-ride area into the Golden Glades Multimodal Transportation Facility (GGMTF), a 10-acre, state-of-the-art, multimodal facility that concentrates all services around a central core, serving as a destination point for community residents, employees, and visitors while matching existing and planned development.

The design-build project featured significant improvements to the existing site, including:

  • 14 sawtooth and four intercity bus bays.
  • Air-conditioned waiting areas.
  • Upgraded walkways, platforms, sidewalks, and bike paths.
  • New six-level, 2,150-space parking garage.
  • 10,500 square feet of space for bottom floor commercial space under the parking garage.

Included in the design were multimodal features such as a new pedestrian bridge that connects the GGMTF to the existing South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) commuter train platforms and the adjacent Tri-Rail station, electric vehicle charging stations, drop-off areas, and ridesharing for services such as Uber and Lyft.

Design-build delivery helped reduce overall project costs. A detailed design and construction criteria package and indicative concept plan for major components non-typical to FDOT standards streamlined the site’s design, shop drawing development, and approval process. The garage layout optimized structural design and construction, including the use of precast concrete elements.

Multimodal Options

GGMTF is an excellent example of multimodal and intermodal services consolidation. The site minimizes walking distances for mode transfers of bus, rail, bicycle, taxi, and auto. Continuous and interconnected covered walkways and passenger waiting areas provide greater passenger comfort. The new indoor transit hub has dedicated security areas and a transit driver break lounge.

Aesthetics

The design team worked with FDOT and other stakeholders to select subtle light colors, specifically on the parking garage, the biggest site feature, to highlight specific destinations. A unique entryway pylon structure directs patrons to the site. The landscape architecture features native, drought-tolerant South Florida plant species. The cohesive architecture and wayfinding throughout the facility guide patrons to various destinations.
